DanToy Hopscotch
We’ve all played hopscotch, hopping into squares painted on the ground with chalk, but what if utilising the DanToy hopscotch brings the classic game to life just a little bit more? When given a piece of chalk and some counters, the creative possibilities for children’s minds are limitless. We wanted to provide you some ideas on how to tweak the original game. We designed a sea themed sustainable hop scotch with a few twists using a lot of planning, a lot of heat, and a little bit of chalk.
Design and planning
Planning the hopscotch required a great deal of thought and research into how to make a simple game more educational by using shapes, colours, and integrating more numerical elements. At the start of the hopscotch we knew a balancing element was necessary, balancing games help improve a child’s motor skills, coordination, and body awareness. Walking up a piece of coral and following the curved line drawn in the middle enhances a child’s spatial awareness and their ability to judge distances and spaces.
We wanted to have simple instructions for children to follow while completing each challenge. Writing words such as ‘pop’ ‘balance’ and ‘collect’ engage the children, help them read the instructions, and follow them by completing the tasks.
Since the DanToy hopscotch set includes hopscotch stones, implementing these in our design is a must. ‘Collect the sugarcane’ is one of the sections children will come across, this is because all bio products are 90% biobased 100% recyclable 100% renewable raw material, made from residual from sugarcane production. Our children are the future so teaching them the importance of sustainability and eco friendly ways is crucial. We placed the stones on each piece of drawn sugarcane, they need to jump down and collect the stones as if it was sugarcane. Finally place in the basket.
The design at the end features the traditional hopscotch concept, but drawn in a floral pattern with various shapes. Recognizing and categorizing shapes to help children develop their cognitive abilities, including visual perception, memory, and problem-solving skills. Learning shapes encourages them to analyse and differentiate between various geometric forms, stimulates their brain development.

Tips and Ticks for our hopscotch
When the children reach each section of the hopscotch create a story related to it. For example when avoiding the crabs take a guess at how many would be on one beach, are they a mummy and daddy crab or run away from them!
